A Physical Therapy Game for Children with Cerebral Palsy
Adventure Bay applies physical and occupational therapies in a variety of mini games using Augmented Reality and accelerometers as mobility aids in pronation, supination, and movement-to-markers exercises. The Academy of Art's Game Development Department partnered with UCSF’s Pediatric Brain Center, The Avalon Academy, and the California Children’s Services Medical Therapy Program.
Game Hub
Players can utilize the main HUB to play their favorite mini-games, check their progress and daily goals, chat with friends, or visit the shop and use their points to earn fun cosmetics they can apply to their avatar and Hideout.

Physical Therapy
Conducted multiple playtests and successfully adjusted the mechanics to improve the accessibility and enjoyment of the game. We also worked with the children’s caretakers to learn about their professional input on exercise challenges, goals, and requirements.

Mini-Game | Shark Drop

-
Subtle movements of the hand would aim the canon. Lining it up with the Shark being carried away by balloons would automatically fire the canon, popping the balloons and thus saving the Shark.
-
The translation of the canon's turn speed could be adjusted based on the individual needs of the Player for a wider range of accessibility.

Mini-Game | Fairy Sweeper
-
This mini-game encourages children in motorized wheelchairs to practice their navigation.
-
The Caretaker would place AR markers in the physical world as an incentive to have the child drive over to the AR marker.
-
When the Player approaches the AR Marker, a fun animation of sweeping a mischievous fairy away with your broom would occur and they would earn points.

The Academy of Art University’s Game Department was awarded a first-of-its-kind grant for the development of Adventure Bay from UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, with support from the Moca Foundation. See more about the game at sgoodale1.wixsite.com/adventurebay
